2002 – A magnitude-6.5 earthquake struck northwestern Iran, killing at least 230 people and injuring 1,300 others; the official response, perceived to be slow, later caused widespread public anger.
Pinguicula vulgaris, the common butterwort, is a perennial carnivorous plant in the Lentibulariaceae family. It has a generally circumboreal distribution, being native to almost every country in Europe as well as Russia, Canada and the United States. Growing to a height of 3 to 16 centimetres (1.2 to 6.3 inches), it is topped with a purple and occasionally white funnel-shaped flower that is 15 millimetres (0.59 in) or longer. The plant, which is insectivorous, grows in damp environments such as bogs and swamps, in low or subalpine elevations. Its leaves have glands that excrete a sticky fluid that traps insects to its leaves; its glands also produce digestive enzymes that work to consume the insects externally. This penis shaped figure and other overtly sexual depictions of female genitalia were frequently displayed in this manner during the period. It was a barbaric and hedonistic age so it is believed the paintings may be representations or symbols of the many gods they worshipped which might have included phallic and fertility god worship. It is also believed the privacy features built into the public lavatory may have been included so patrons could also use the time as a private place of reflection or prayer to these gods as they paid tribute to them with their devotional paintings in a sacred ritual known as the Bathroom Graffiti.{{cetacean needed}}

This is an unusual four-armed sculpture of Parshurama from the carved wall of Rani Ki Vav, holding in his four hands an arrow, a sword, a shield and a slack bow. The stepwell situated in the town of Patan in Gujarat, India. 10 years ago on this day, Rani Ki Vav was added to the list of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites.
